Thin Client/Virtual Users Search
Large Citrix/Terminal server farms and virtualized environments are typically characterized by a wide range of servers, each of which could be servicing a large number of concurrent users. When a particular user reports an issue with a server, the administrator has to locate that user and the server that is being accessed by him/her, so that effective prognosis can be performed and the root-cause of the issue identified. Administrators of these vast environments often have to toil for hours to identify the problem servers. The User search option provided by the eG Enterprise suite is tailored for such large environments. This option lists the servers accessed by a specified user and the last access time for each server, so that administrators can quickly and accurately identify the server that was being accessed by the user when he/she reported a problem. Moreover, to support the administrator's diagnostic efforts, this page provides links to tools such as graphs and detailed measures, thus facilitating swift problem isolation and resolution.
This page appears when the User option is selected from the search capability available in the eG Enterprise suite acrosss all the modules. To search for servers accessed by a particular user using this page, do the following:
Specify the name of the user to search for in the Search text box and click the icon.
The Search results for page will then appear listing the servers accessed by the user, the Component Type (whether Citrix server/Terminal server/VMware ESX/VMware VDI/Virtual server), and the date and time at which each of the servers were last accessed. In addition, a User/Virtual Desktops column will also be available in this page. In case of Citrix/Terminal server farms, this column just displays the User name searched for. Whereas, in the case of a VMware ESX / VMware VDI / Virtual server, this column also indicates whether the specified user in the User/Virtual Desktops column is a domain user or a local user. Domain users are pre-fixed by the corresponding domain name, and are displayed in the format: DomainName\UserName. For instance, if the user in the User/Virtual Desktops column contains ‘chn\egtest’, then ‘chn’ is the domain name and ‘egtest’ is the User that is searched for.
Note:
This page will not provide the list of all sessions for a user. In other words, if the given user has accessed a server three times, then the date and time of the last login alone will be displayed in this page and not the other two logins. To obtain detailed session information pertaining to a user, use the Session Report provided by the eG Reporter component of the eG Enterprise suite.
By default, this page has a set of default search specification. The default search settings are hidden by default. If you do not want to disturb these default settings, then you can proceed to generate the result by clicking the icon soon after you specify the name of the user in the Search text box. However, if you want to view and then alter these settings (if required), click on the icon. The default settings will then appear in the DEFAULT SETTINGS drop down window. The steps below discuss each of these settings and how they can be customized.
To view the list of only those servers that the specified user had accessed during a particular period, then, from the Timeline list, select either a fixed duration such as 1 hour, 2 days, etc., or the Any option. If Any is chosen, you will have to provide a definite time period by specifying a From and To date/time.
Finally, click the Go button to view the access details of the user.
Note:
By default, the default Timeline for the search is 1 hour. If you wish to override the default Timeline, you can do so by providing a timeline of your choice against the Timeline option that is available under the Default_Duration section of the <EG_INSTALL_DIR>\manager\config\eg_searchDetails.ini file.
If the user of your interest is currently logged into the server, then clicking on such user in the User/Virtual Desktops column will lead you to the User Experience dashboard that reveals the performance of the user on the server he/she is logged into.
If the user of your interest is currently logged out of the server, then clicking on such user in the User/Virtual Desktops column will lead you to the Performance dashboard of a desktop that reveals the performance of the virtual desktop using which the user had logged in earlier.
Click on the icon corresponding to a Server to view a graph. In case of a Citrix server, by default, a graph of the No of sessions measure of the CtxXpUserTest for that server will appear. Similarly, in case of a Terminal server, a graph of the No of sessions measure of the TermUserTest for that server will appear, by default. For a VMware server, on the other hand, the default graph will pertain to the Current sessions and Cpu used measures reported by the VmGuestTest. All these graphs reveal the extent to which memory and/or CPU resources were utilized by the specified user on that server, around the time of the last access. For a graphical representation of any other user parameter, select a different Measure from the graph page and click the Graph button. By analyzing the measure behavior around the time of the last access, administrators can easily identify anomalies.
Click on the icon corresponding to a Server to view detailed information pertaining to the user around the same time as the last access. While detailed resource usage information will be available in this page for Citrix/Terminal service users, for virtual users, the detailed diagnosis page will display the virtual machines (i.e., the guest operating systems) that have been accessed by the specified user during the time of the last access.
